GREEN CAMPUS INITIATIVES AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Abstract
Green campus programs have taken a crucial role as a tactic of enhancing sustainability and
environmental accountability in tertiary institutions of learning. Universities are very important
in producing environmentally conscious citizens and executing sustainable activities. This
paper explores the notion of green campuses, major environmental programs embraced by
universities and their contribution towards environmental accountability to both the students
and other stakeholders. The paper examines the available literature on sustainability practices
which include energy conservation, waste management, water conservation, green
infrastructure and environmental education. The results indicate that green campus programs
enhance environmental sensitivity, lessen environmental imprint, and lead to sustainable
growth. The conclusion of the paper is that schools should embrace sustainability in policies,
infrastructure, and school programs to develop responsible communities in regard to
environmental matters.
